How We Research

Updated on

Every guide here starts with one question: will this set work for the person who is shopping for it? For cookware, that means your stove, your cooking habits and how much care you're willing to give your pans.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your kitchen

A glass top stove, a gas range and an induction cooktop each favor different pans. A couple in a small apartment needs a different set than a family that cooks every night.

We check the material, the base and the piece count, and we say what to look for when your stove limits the choice.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at what each set is made of (stainless steel, hard-anodized aluminum, ceramic-coated or a hybrid), how many pieces come in the box and what the lids and handles are like. We also note oven limits, dishwasher guidance and whether the maker lists the set as induction ready.

Cuisinart, Tramontina, T-fal and the other makers describe their sets in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a set. We look for patterns, like handles that loosen, coatings that wear, lids that don't fit and pans that warp.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A set that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell similar sets under close names, so we check each model name, piece count and what comes in the box, and we only link new sets.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any set with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have cooked with every set we cover.

We don't give health verdicts on coatings or metals. We repeat what makers say about their materials, label it as their claim and send you to the maker's care instructions.
